Literacy Program

About the Program

Literacy is one of the main areas of focus for the Spencerport Rotary Club.

Over the years we have undertaken numerous projects and service activities to promote literacy to our youth.

We often team up the the staff at the Spencerport Central School District (SCSD) and undertake activities within the district schools.

Yearly, we attend a Rotary District Literacy Seminar to share ideas about the literacy projects that other Rotary Clubs are doing.

Current Activities

Reading Program

Once a month, Spencerport Rotary Club members read to the children at the four elementary schools within SCSD:

  • Terry Taylor Elementary
  • Munn Elementary
  • Canal View Elementary; and
  • Bernabi Elementary
We often leave behind the story we have read to be added to the classroom’s library.

Rotary Oratorical Contest

Each year for the past few years, the club have sponsored and supported a local high school student to enter our Rotary District’s annual oratorical contest.

The contest helps the participants to help build public speaking skills and confidence.

Entrants present a 5 to 7 minute speech on a defined topic and are judged on their speech.

Competitors work through several stages of the competition.  Finalists have the opportunity to be awarded a college scholarship.

Visit to School 28

Once a year,  we visit School 28 in the City of Rochester to donate a book bag containing  a book, notebooks, stationery and mittens to each child in a chosen classroom.  We also read a story to the students in that class.

Previous Activities

Previously, Spencerport Rotary Club has undertaken numerous other literacy based service projects including:

  • Book Bag Program
  • Dictionary Program
